How We Set Our Prices

We benchmark daily against the London Metal Exchange (LME) settlement price and adjust for grade, contamination and current yard demand. Copper, aluminium and lead track LME most closely. Steel and iron follow UK mill and export demand more than LME, which is why ferrous prices can hold steady for weeks while copper moves several times in a single morning. Stainless is priced off its nickel content, which is why 316 (higher nickel) pays more than 304. We update the price list every working morning.

If you've driven a load over and the LME has jumped that morning, the price you see at the gate is the price we'll pay. We don't claw it back later. Same goes the other way: if it's dropped, we honour the morning's posted rate for anyone already in the queue.

Scrap Metal Prices Per KG: How to Work It Out

All our prices are shown per tonne (1,000kg). To get the per kg rate, divide by 1,000.

Copper Scrap Price Per KG

Copper pays the most of any common scrap metal. Bright copper wire (stripped, no insulation) tops the list, followed by clean copper tube and heavy copper. A note on "bright" — it doesn't mean shiny. Freshly stripped wire is a dull pinky-orange. If your wire is genuinely shiny, it's been kept indoors and well looked after, but most bright wire we see is the dull stripped sort. To convert per-tonne to per-kg, divide by 1,000. So £6,500/t works out at £6.50/kg.

Aluminium Scrap Price Per KG

Grade makes a big difference with aluminium. Clean sheet, window frames and extrusions fetch noticeably more than cast ali (engine blocks, wheels) or mixed loads. Aluminium's light, so a decent quantity makes the trip worthwhile. If a magnet won't stick and the piece feels light for its size, it's almost certainly aluminium. A useful first check before driving over. At around £1,200/t the per-kg rate works out at £1.20. Check the live table for today's figure.

Brass Scrap Price Per KG

Clean yellow brass (taps, valves, plumbing fittings) pays well. Mixed or dirty brass with other metals attached pays less. Worth separating if you've got time. Rod brass and red brass are graded differently again, so if you're not sure what you've got, bring it in and we'll tell you on the spot.

Lead Scrap Price Per KG

Lead prices are relatively stable compared to copper, but they still shift with global demand. Sheet lead, pipe and roof flashing all come in at similar rates. Don't underestimate the weight. Lead is dense, and a small roll of flashing can be surprisingly heavy. Same conversion applies: divide the per-tonne price by 1,000 to get per kg.

Steel & Iron Scrap Price Per KG

Steel and iron (ferrous metals) pay much less per kg than non-ferrous. Heavy steel plate, RSJ beams and new offcuts are at the top of the ferrous range. Light iron (car bodies, thin sheet, appliances) pays less. Quick way to tell cast iron from steel of similar thickness: cast iron snaps when struck, steel bends. Brake discs, old radiators and engine blocks are typical cast. Prices typically sit between £80 and £200 per tonne depending on grade, so roughly 8p to 20p per kg. We buy it all.

Stainless Steel Scrap Price Per KG

Stainless pays considerably more than mild steel, and it's non-ferrous. We take grade 304 and 316. Quick test: if a magnet won't stick, there's a good chance it's stainless. Not always definitive, but it's a start. If you're unsure what grade you've got, give us a ring before making the journey.

Non-Ferrous vs Ferrous: What's the Difference?

Understanding your metal helps you get the best price.

Non-Ferrous Metals

Non-ferrous metals contain no significant iron. They don't rust, are generally lighter, and command higher scrap prices. A magnet won't stick to them. Common non-ferrous metals include copper, brass, aluminium, lead, zinc, stainless steel, and nickel. These are the metals we specialise in.

Ferrous Metals

Ferrous metals contain iron and are magnetic. They're lower in price per tonne than non-ferrous but we buy large quantities. Steel beams, iron railings, car bodies, and cast iron all fall into this category. We accept all grades at all three scrap yards.

Scrap Metal Price FAQs

How often are scrap metal prices updated?
Every working morning. We post the day's rates against the LME settlement and they hold for the day unless something dramatic happens in the market. Copper, aluminium and lead move the most day to day.
Do you publish prices for gold and silver?
Gold and silver move minute by minute, so we price each item individually using certified testing equipment rather than posting a static rate. Call or WhatsApp us a photo and approximate weight and we'll quote on the spot.
Are prices the same at all three depots?
Yes. One price list across Preston, Stockport and Sheffield, updated each morning. Don't drive further hoping for a better rate at one of our other yards. There won't be one.
Do prices include VAT?
Prices shown are per tonne and exclusive of VAT. VAT applies on some transactions depending on your status. Ask at the yard if you need a VAT receipt.
What is the scrap copper price per kg today in the UK?
Copper moves daily with the LME, so the answer depends on when you're asking. Bright copper wire and clean copper tube fetch the highest rates. Check the live price table above for today's figure, or call us on 0808 304 0673. Per-kg is the per-tonne price divided by 1,000.
What is the scrap aluminium price per kg in the UK?
Grade matters more than market for aluminium. Clean sheet pays more than cast or mixed. Check the price table above for today's confirmed rate, or call.
What is scrap lead worth per kg?
Lead's the steadier non-ferrous metal. Sheet lead, pipe and roof flashing all fetch similar rates and don't swing as much as copper. Today's posted rate is on the live table, or WhatsApp us for a quick quote.
How much is scrap steel and iron worth per kg?
We only buy two ferrous grades: brake discs and Mixed Tool Steel. Brake discs go for roughly £0.15–0.20/kg; Mixed Tool Steel pays much more (around £1.20–1.60/kg) because of its tungsten, molybdenum and chromium content. We don’t currently buy general ferrous such as heavy steel, light iron, cast iron or new offcuts — please contact a specialist ferrous merchant for those.
